Two decades later, the Amazons compete along the west coast and Canada, and continue to welcome out, questioning and supportive women 16 and older to their ever-growing roster. The 2013 season marks the 23rd race season for the Amazon Dragons and the 22nd anniversary of the club. Paddles Up!!!

Angry Unicorns
Salem, OR
First, some facts about unicorns: 1) Unicorns have one horn (hence the name). 2) Unicorns are creatures made up of cotton candy and light with bubblegum frosting...until you make them angry. Then they are made of hot tamales and nightmares... 3) Unicorns are very bad at rescuing cats from trees (ask us how we know). 4) Unicorns like peanut M&Ms, but peanut butter M&Ms make them psychotic. 5) We fed a unicorn peanut butter M&Ms and it went on a homicidal rage that ended with us all up a tree without a paddle. This is how we discovered our true team name, The Angry Unicorns. 6) Our team initials (AU), that's the periodic designation for gold. We know this because we are also major nerds (this is not a fact about unicorns). There is something very demented about the idea of an angry unicorn. Our team is made up of very demented people. Demented people who like to paddle and wear horns.

New paddlers are eager to learn the stroke and contribute energy, strength and enthusiasm to the team. We work diligently with ourr coach, Rolando, keeping up with his famous 10 minute runs. Even struggling for breath, we still find the fun in training and naturally in racing. Our other coach, Marv, continues to inspire us to reach, power, stay in time and of course... win. We are looking forward to the 2014 season to test our abilities at both local and out-of-town races. So, watch out for the team in blue as in BlewByU!

Castaways
Portland, OR
We are a fun "competitively recreational" team that originally formed about the turn of the century after finding our way back from a mostly imaginary three-hour tour, complete with Skippers, Gilligans and Mary Anns. We are old. We are young. We make food, teach kids, sell socks, coordinate transplants, and we doctor, nurse, and care for others when not on the water. Some might say that our favorite part of dragon boating is the after-race beer. Not true. We like to eat too. We train hard and enjoy nature/wildlife breaks, while avoiding pesky things like time trials and required practices. Above all, we paddle hard and enjoy the journey.

Portland, OR
We are a team selected by a highly technical and stringent scouting process, meticulously performed over the span of several years by some the best and brightest coaches in the nation. We are among the fastest, strongest, fittest, and most motivated athletes ever to grace the Pacific Northwest! That, or we were picked at random off the streets... one of the two... we don't remember which... We never let up, never give up, never slow up. Always making time to save kittens and kiss babies, S.O.L. is a team you'll be proud to bring home to mother

Starbucks Waverunners
Vancouver, BC
The Waverunners began as a team of friends from UBC Commerce who paddled together for fun in the year 2000. We have evolved into a diverse group of paddlers working together towards the goals of: inclusion, cohesion, advancement, competition, and most importantly, fun! We have enjoyed paddling competitively at festivals in Canada, the United States and Asia. We are proud to represent and have the continued support of Starbucks Coffee Company and Oddball Workshop.

Stumptown Paddlers
Portland, OR
A mixed team formed by the unholy coupling of Poseidon and a tree, we're captained by a two-time women's street fighting champion, steered by a former child pirate and refuge from the Seven Seas, and crewed by a gaggle of muppets. We may be loud, we may be rowdy, we may be powered by a toxic mixture of coffee and booze. We may be all those things. But we're definitely creeping up on your behind and coming for your medals.

Sync or Swim has been rocking the docks of dragon boat races from Salem to Nanaimo for over 16 years. We paddle out of Portland, OR, but visit our friends in Canada as often as we can. Team Spitfire SAKE
Seattle, WA
We like Piña Coladas, and since we’re from Seattle we often get caught in the rain. Some of us are into yoga, we’re all a bunch of brains (we’re a veritable think tank up in here). We like making… as if!... we keep our private lives private. What happens in dragon boating, stays in dragon boating.
Team Spitfire SAKE is the team that you’re looking for... escape with us on a dragon boat, with a bunch of people who really like each other, good food, cold beverages, and the sweet smell of competition. We love the feel of the ocean, but we paddle on Lake Washington, and the taste of champagne, but most us like beer better. But most of all we are a united force who likes to play hard, paddle harder, and achieve team success. SAKE, SAKE, SAKE, Oy, Oy, Oy!

Wasabi VIP
Portland, OR
The Visually Impaired Paddlers (VIP) team was formed in 2013, when we joined the Wasabi Paddling Club. Most of our paddlers are alumni of the Portland Rose Festival team Lethally Blind. Our team members range in age and are from all walks of life. The main thing that we have in common is vision loss and the love of paddling. We have a variety of vision challenges on our boat, from slight vision loss to completely blind. We also have a handful of fully sighted team members to help us navigate the Willamette River safely. Don't let our vision loss discount our paddling abilities. With our secret weapon (Coach Sue), and our synchronized paddling techniques, we are extremely competitive on race day.

WestShore Warriors
Victoria, BC
We are a non-profit federation of competitive individual dragon boat paddlers loosely representing the Western Communities of Victoria. We are a competitive boat: when practicing, we are strongly focused on improving technique, endurance and teamwork; and, when racing, we are very focused on winning, but never at the expense of safety or of having fun! As a social-minded team we promote active lifestyle and healthy social interaction through the sport of dragon boating. We take pride in our efforts to develop paddlers and enhance overall crew performance by emphasizing strong team dynamics and cohesion. We believe that teamwork, mutual respect and positive reinforcement are keys to success both on and off the water. Though we were founded in 2007 within the Victoria Western Shore communities, we have expanded our circle and now encourage membership and sponsorship from anywhere within the Greater Victoria area. Paddles Up!
