Angry Unicorns
Salem, OR

First, some facts about unicorns: 1) Unicorns have one horn (hence the name). 2) Unicorns are creatures made up of cotton candy and light with bubblegum frosting... until you make them angry. Then they are made of hot tamales and nightmares. 3) Unicorns are very bad at rescuing cats from trees (ask us how we know). 4) Unicorns like peanut M&Ms, but peanut butter M&Ms make them psychotic. 5) We fed a unicorn peanut butter M&Ms and it went on a homicidal rage that ended with us all up a tree without a paddle. This is how we discovered our true team name, The Angry Unicorns. 6) Our team initials (AU), that’s the periodic designation for gold. We know this because we are also major nerds (this is not a fact about unicorns). There is something very demented about the idea of an angry unicorn. Our team is made up of very demented people. Demented people who like to paddle and wear horns.

Marooned on a desert isle for over 15 years with the Skipper and his little buddy, the Castaways women have finally found their way out. This powerful group of smart, beautiful women will no longer be slowed by their male counterparts. The Castaladies, like the rest of the team, enjoy a quality IPA after a hard practice and can Karaoke with the best of them. They play hard, stay focused in the boat, and paddle with the precision of a finely-tuned engine. Say hello to Portland's Castaladies.

Regardless of how experienced any team member is, all share the common love of the water and the challenge of dragon boat racing. Paddling brings a spirit of camaraderie and support that has lead to positive, life-changing experiences for women on our team as well as higher fitness levels for all. Go Rip City!!!

Seattle Flying Valkyries
Seattle, WA

Under the guidance of Coach Valerie (Val-kyries, get it?), we paddle the waters of Lake Union, occasionally singing loudly and out-of-tune the "Ride of the Valkyries." Valkyries are powerful women of Norse mythology who descend upon flying horses to choose which slain battle heroes enter Valhalla. Valkyries are associated with fairness, brightness, and gold. The Seattle Flying Valkyries descend from Seattle wearing brightly-colored jerseys to fiercely (but fairly) fight for gold! A special thank you to Kenmore Air for graciously donating moorage for our boats.
